Its restrained colours and irregular surface give the vessel a strong presence, balancing an elegant silhouette with the earthy character associated with Mino ceramics.

The rounded shoulder rises into a short, narrow neck with a subtly flaring lip. Below, the body tapers towards a lightly spreading base, creating a continuous vertical outline. Shallow ridges and uneven modelling catch the light across the lower section, emphasising the contrast between the smooth overall shape and its tactile surface.

Cloudy white and grey glaze reveals darker iron-brown passages beneath, with fine crackle and small surface variations enriching the finish. A pale roundel on the principal face contains freely drawn stems and leaves, their dark brushwork contrasting with the surrounding mottled ground. Warm reddish-brown tones appear around the mouth and base.

Nezumi Shino, meaning “mouse-grey Shino”, is distinguished by the interaction of iron-bearing decoration and feldspathic glaze. Here, the combination of a softly varied ground and clear floral panel gives the traditional technique an individual expression. Accompanied by its original inscribed wooden box.

Dimensions

27.8cm(h) x 14.3cm(w)

Footnote

Tamaoki Yasuo (b. 1941, Gifu Prefecture) studied under Kato Kobei V and is a full member of the Japan Kogei Association, as well as a designated Preserver of Intangible Cultural Property in Tajimi City.
