After studying under Joji Yamashita from 1981, he established his own kiln in Osafune in 1990 and became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1997. Wakimoto specialises in sculptural flower vessels and sake wares formed using traditional coil-building and kurinuki carving techniques. He is particularly acclaimed for his exceptional firing methods, often achieving both distinct oxidation and reduction effects within a single design, making him a leading exponent of this demanding approach.
