A Rectangular Ceramic Vase (方瓶 花器)

Heisei Era (1989-2019)

About the work

A refined rectangular stoneware vase by Miyashita Zenji, a leading figure in modern Japanese ceramics. The piece presents a crisp, architectural silhouette with a softly elevated top and a neatly centered mouth. The surface is finished in a calm gray-white glaze with natural speckling, complemented by a continuous band of embossed cross-shaped motifs that encircle the upper body. This subtle relief adds visual rhythm and tactile interest while maintaining a serene and minimalist aesthetic.

Equally suited for ikebana arrangements or as a sculptural display piece, the work embodies Miyashita’s balance of contemporary design and traditional ceramic craftsmanship. Included are the original wooden box, protective cloth, and documentation.

Footnote

Miyashita Zenji (宮下善爾, 1939–2012) was a celebrated Japanese ceramic artist and graduate of Kyoto City University of Arts, where he studied under Kiyomizu Kyūbei and Kusube Yaichi. He began his career working with celadon, mastering the challenges of precise form and firing.

From 1964, he exhibited regularly at the Nitten, winning 18 awards. He became known for his technique of layering colored clays dyed with mineral pigments, creating delicate striations that evoke Heian-era court aesthetics. His works are held in major institutions including the British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Freer and Sackler Galleries.
