A Shino Flattened Vase (志野扁壷)

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

This Shino flattened vase by Kato Kozo demonstrates the refined surface sensibility and structural assurance that define his mature work. The flattened, rounded body provides a broad canvas for the soft pink Shino feldspathic glaze, which breaks into areas of warm orange and pale ash tones under the influence of the kiln. Across the surface, deliberate iron brushwork forms sweeping arcs and scattered markings that animate the vessel while remaining balanced within the quiet elegance of the glaze. The mouth rises in a compact, cylindrical neck that contrasts with the wide, compressed profile of the body. Natural kiln textures and subtle pinholing contribute further nuance. The base reveals a characteristic fired-orange tone and a clearly impressed seal mark.

The piece is accompanied by its original signed box and printed insert, confirming its authenticity.
