A Bizen Tokkuri (備前徳利)

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

This Bizen tokkuri by Kakurezaki Ryuichi exemplifies the powerful sculptural approach and contemporary spirit that define the artist’s work. The vessel rises with a commanding yet organic presence, its form intentionally irregular, marked by assertive cuts, angled planes, and subtle compressions that create a sense of movement and tension. The silhouette is robust and expressive, emphasizing Kakurezaki’s interest in pushing traditional Bizen forms toward a more sculptural, almost architectural language.

The surface bears the unmistakable results of prolonged wood firing. Layers of warm iron rich reds transition into darker, kiln scarred grays and charcoal tones, punctuated by natural ash deposits and fire markings. These kiln born effects form a complex, tactile skin that shifts with light and viewing angle, underscoring the dialogue between controlled form and the unpredictable forces of flame.

The interior is naturally vitrified through firing, providing a smooth surface suitable for use while preserving the raw character of Bizen clay. The piece is accompanied by its original signed tomobako, attesting to authenticity and provenance.
