A Shino Flower Vase (志野花入)

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989–2019) or Reiwa Era (2019 – present)

About the work

An expressive and sculptural Shino flower vase (hanaire) by master ceramicist Goro Suzuki, one of the leading contemporary figures in the revival and innovation of Mino ware traditions. The surface is richly textured with a milky white feldspar glaze, enhanced by soft orange blushes and natural ash markings from the wood-firing process. The asymmetrical form, combined with the bold energy of the claywork, showcases Suzuki’s signature style—balancing spontaneity with deep respect for tradition.

Presented in its original signed tomobako (wooden storage box) with an accompanying certificate, this jar exemplifies Suzuki’s refined approach to form and texture, blending traditional aesthetics with modern sensibilities.

Footnote

Goro Suzuki, born in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, is internationally celebrated for his avant-garde approach to Shino and Oribe ware. After studying in Seto and under legendary potter Toyozo Arakawa, Suzuki developed a unique voice within Japanese ceramics. His works are included in major museum collections worldwide, and he has been featured in exhibitions across Japan, the U.S., and Europe. A key figure in post-war ceramic art, Suzuki continues to shape the landscape of contemporary Mino ware through bold forms and innovative glazing techniques.
