An Oborogin Single-Stem Vase (朧銀一輪生)

Showa Era (1926-1989) or Heisei Era (1989-2019)

About the work

A refined ichirin ike single flower vase by celebrated Japanese metal artist Hasuda  Shugoro, executed in oborogin. The work is conceived as a striking architectural composition, with a tall rectangular body surmounted by a narrower square neck and projecting geometric detail.

The restrained geometry is enlivened by a subtly mottled silvery grey surface. Fine linear decoration runs vertically across the body and is intersected by a delicate horizontal line, creating an understated grid that emphasises the vase's elongated proportions. The softly speckled surface of the oborogin gives the otherwise rigorous form considerable depth, changing gently with the light.

The contrast between the substantial rectangular body and the smaller offset details of the neck demonstrates Hasuda's distinctly modern approach to metalwork. Rather than relying on conventional floral or pictorial ornament, the design is built around proportion, line, texture and the inherent qualities of the metal itself.

The base bears the artist's signature. The vase is accompanied by its original signed wooden tomobako.
