A Shino Ware Yunomi

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

A striking Shino ware cup by Kato Toyohisa, this piece embodies the vitality and rustic refinement of the Mino tradition. The thick feldspathic glaze flows generously across the surface, shifting from a warm milky white to vivid scarlet tones where the flame has kissed the clay. Characteristic pinholing and soft crawling enrich the texture, adding visual depth and a tactile quality that invites touch as much as use.

The form is slightly irregular, echoing the hand of the potter and embracing the wabi-sabi spirit of natural imperfection. Its substantial walls and solid base provide both a sense of durability and quiet elegance, making it well-suited as a yunomi for daily tea enjoyment or as a sake vessel in a more contemplative setting.

Although this piece is offered without its original tomobako (wooden storage box), it remains a fully authentic example of Toyohisa’s artistry, carrying the warmth and individuality of his kiln.
