An Engraved Bronze Sculpture – Zodiac Ox (Ushi)

Showa Era (1926 – 1989) or Heisei Era (1989–2019)

About the work

This contemplative bronze sculpture of the ox by Kobayashi Shomin conveys calm strength and patience. With engraved detailing and softened forms, the artist captures the essence of the animal in a compact, quietly expressive style.

The work’s minimalism and material weight echo the aesthetic values of Japanese sculpture—restraint, balance, and respect for form. The sculpture is housed in its original signed tomobako (wooden storage box).
