A Tenmoku-Glazed Flower Vase (天目釉ト型花器)

Showa Era (1926-1989) or Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019 – present)

About the work

A bold and architecturally inspired flower vase by Malcolm Wright, a renowned American ceramic artist influenced by Japanese traditions. The piece is coated in a deep Tenmoku glaze, creating a mirror-like black surface with subtle iron-red highlights along the edges. The structured, geometric form is punctuated by a dynamic cutout, adding depth and contrast to the smooth glaze.

This unique vase blends traditional Japanese firing techniques with modernist sculptural aesthetics, making it a compelling addition to any collection. It comes with a tomobako (signed wooden storage box) to ensure authenticity and provenance.
