A Brass Table Bell “Sound of the Mountains” (黄銅 卓鈴「山の音」)

Showa Era (1926–1989)

About the work

A contemplative cast-brass table bell by acclaimed metal artist Hasuda Shugoro, titled “Yama no Oto” or “Sound of the Mountains.” This piece exemplifies Hasuda’s mastery of material and poetic form, channeling both minimalist elegance and deep resonance in a compact sculptural object.

The bell features a low, wide dome with a subtly textured patina that shifts between matte bronze and soft golden highlights. Resting on a discreet ringed base, it evokes natural topographies—its silhouette reminiscent of a distant mountain peak. The finely balanced interior houses a suspended striker, producing a soft, lingering tone when activated, embodying the meditative qualities of traditional Japanese sound-making objects.

This work is presented in its original tomobako (signed wooden box) with artist inscription, underscoring its significance as both a functional object and a collectible work of modern metalcraft.
