A Fuji-Form Iron Tetsubin with “Shochikubai” Motif

Edo Era (1603–1868) or Meiji Era (1868-1912)

About the work

This monumental sand-cast iron 砂鉄)kettle, crafted by a member of the distinguished Koizumi Nizaemon lineage, is an exceptional example of Nanbu ironwork. Weighing approximately 5.3 kg and measuring an impressive 36 cm in height (including the handle), this tetsubin is formed in the rare and commanding Fuji shape, evoking the grandeur of Japan’s iconic mountain.

The body is adorned with the auspicious Shochikubai (松竹梅 – pine, bamboo, and plum) motif, symbols of perseverance, resilience, and renewal, deeply cherished in Japanese culture. One side features a finely detailed plum blossom and pine composition, while the reverse depicts a flowing waterfall framed by bamboo and pine, a powerful evocation of natural harmony.

Footnote

Koizumi Nizaemon (小泉仁左衛門) holds a distinguished place in the history of Japanese metalwork. Since 1659, the family has been at the center of developing and perfecting Nanbu ironware (Nanbu tekki), a tradition deeply rooted in Morioka. Over generations, they established themselves as the leading producers of iron kettles (tetsubin), tea utensils, and other cast-metal works, combining technical precision with refined artistic expression. Recognized as innovators and custodians of cultural heritage, the Koizumi kettles—often decorated with auspicious motifs and inscriptions—remain highly prized by collectors, connoisseurs, and practitioners of the Japanese tea tradition.
