A Bronze Sculpture and Table Bell named “Hiyaku” (飛躍)

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

A refined and expressive work by Ryoji Goto, cast in bronze and finished with a rich green verdigris patina. Conceived as both a sculptural object and a functional table bell, the piece features a stylized female figure rising dynamically from a rounded base. The elongated form and upward-reaching gesture embody the theme of hiyaku (leap or flight), suggesting motion, aspiration, and quiet strength.

The verdigris surface enhances the organic contours of the figure, creating depth and subtle tonal variation while emphasizing the contrast between the solid base and the fluid, ascending body. Despite its compact size, the work carries a strong presence, combining weight, balance, and elegance. It functions as a bell while standing as a striking example of modern Japanese sculpture suitable for display.
