Miyagawa Kosai (宮川香斎)

The Miyagawa family traces its ceramic heritage to the late seventeenth century in the early Edo period, when Miyagawa Kohei Masaichi left Miyagawa village in Omi and settled near Chionin in Kyoto to begin work in pottery. His descendants adopted the name Jihei, and from the late Edo period the name Kosai became associated with full artistic production. Over more than three centuries, the family has created ceramics that respond to the needs and aesthetics of each era while maintaining the continuity of a long established kiln tradition.
