A Shino Tea Bowl (志野彩碗)

Heisei Era (1989-2019)

About the work

This Shino tea bowl by Kato Toyohisa is a quietly expressive work that exemplifies his sensitive handling of form and glaze within the Shino tradition. The bowl is compact and gently rounded, with softly articulated vertical facets that subtly shape the body. The rim is slightly irregular and delicately undulating, introducing a natural rhythm that reflects hand forming rather than mechanical precision.

The surface is coated in a milky feldspathic Shino glaze that flows unevenly over the body, revealing delicate blushes of pale pink, soft gray, and faint green tones beneath. These subtle color variations emerge through controlled firing, creating a calm, atmospheric surface rather than dramatic contrast. Fine pinholing and gentle textural variation add depth and tactility, while the glaze gathers more thickly along ridges and recesses, emphasizing the bowl’s sculptural contours.

It is accompanied by its original wooden storage box, cloth, and descriptive leaflet, confirming authenticity and careful preservation.
