A Bizen Chawan (備前茶碗)

Showa Era (1926-1989)

About the work

This Bizen tea bowl by Saito Takashi presents a compelling balance between traditional Bizen aesthetics and a quietly modern sensibility. The bowl is formed with a low, gently cylindrical body and a subtly irregular rim, giving it a grounded presence appropriate for use in the tea ceremony. Its slightly oval opening enhances the sense of hand-formed immediacy and tactile engagement.

The surface reveals the rich natural firing effects characteristic of Bizen ware. Muted olive and earthy brown tones are punctuated by distinct reddish clay patches where the body was shielded during firing. Fine ash markings and subtle firing lines traverse the surface, recording the interaction of flame, ash, and clay within the kiln. These naturally occurring variations produce a restrained yet expressive surface that changes character as the bowl is turned in the hand.

The piece is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), cloth, and descriptive leaflet.
