A Raku Chawan (#1615)

2025

About the work

This raku chawan by Steven Branfman takes a compact, cylindrical form with softly irregular walls and a subtly undulating rim that reflects the immediacy of hand forming. The bowl sits on a dark, slightly recessed foot, giving it a grounded and stable presence.

The surface is layered with pale gray and off white glazes, animated by fine crackle, speckling, and areas of pitting typical of the raku process. A diagonal sweep of muted blue and warm yellow crosses the upper portion of the vessel, introducing a gentle sense of movement against the otherwise quiet, mineral toned field. Darker markings near the base add visual weight and anchor the composition.

Both interior and exterior surfaces show the effects of fire and reduction, with tonal variation and texture emerging naturally from the process. The chawan exemplifies Branfman’s sensitivity to balance between form, surface, and spontaneity.
