A Pair of Shino Ware Chawan (志野茶碗)

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

A refined pair of Shino tea bowls by Tamaoki Yasuo. The chawan embody his celebrated fusion of traditional Shino aesthetics with a bold, expressive sensibility, demonstrating both technical mastery and creative innovation.

Each bowl reveals the distinctive feldspathic glaze effects of Shino ware, with vivid red contrasts against soft white fields, achieved through Tamaoki’s renowned aka-shino technique. The surfaces display natural textures, brushwork, and kiln variations, lending individuality to each vessel while maintaining a harmonious dialogue as a set.

The pair is housed in its original signed tomobako (wooden storage box), authenticating the work as a unified creation by the artist.
