A Shino Teacup (志野湯呑)

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

A superb Shino teacup by Kozo Kato, celebrated as one of the foremost masters of Mino ceramics and a Living National Treasure for his achievements in Shino ware. Kato’s work is renowned for its bold reinterpretation of Momoyama-period aesthetics, combined with a deep respect for traditional kiln practices.

The teacup presents a cylindrical form with a subtly faceted surface, highlighted by a pale pink feldspathic glaze. Rich scarlet hi-iro tones emerge naturally from the firing, complemented by soft grayish-blue iron underglaze brushwork suggestive of floral motifs. The surface is alive with textural variations, from minute pinholes to flowing glaze drips, creating a tactile presence characteristic of fine Shino.

The work is accompanied by its original signed tomobako (wooden storage box), bearing the artist’s inscription and seal, along with supporting documentation attesting to authenticity.
