An Aka-Shino Sake Cup

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

This expressive guinomi (sake cup) is the work of Kato Toyohisa, a potter belonging to the celebrated Mino tradition. The piece exemplifies the Aka-Shino style, with its vibrant red clay body partially covered by a thick white feldspathic glaze that flows naturally over the surface. The glaze interacts dynamically with the iron-rich clay, creating a striking contrast of colors and textures. With its bold form and tactile surface, the work reflects the earthy, rustic beauty central to the aesthetics of Shino ware.

The sake cup comes housed in its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako) and protective cloth, affirming its authenticity and provenance.
