A Nezumi Shino Tokkuri (鼠志野徳利)
Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)
About the work
This Nezumi Shino tokkuri by Kato Toyohisa exemplifies the restrained beauty and subtle depth associated with this Shino tradition. The vessel has a rounded, well balanced body that rises naturally into a short, gently flared neck, creating a calm and stable silhouette well suited to both use and display.
The surface is coated with a feldspathic Shino glaze that softens into cool gray white tones typical of Nezumi Shino. Beneath the glaze, warm reddish clay emerges in flowing bands and blushes formed by flame and iron during firing. Fine pinholing, gentle crawling, and areas of pooled glaze give the surface a tactile richness and visual complexity without excess decoration. These kiln born effects highlight the dialogue between clay, glaze, and fire that defines Shino ware.
The interior is smoothly glazed for practical use, while the foot reveals exposed clay and firing marks. The base bears the artist’s mark. The piece is accompanied by its original wooden storage box, cloth, and documentation.
