A Shino Yunomi (志野湯呑)

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

This Shino yunomi by Kato Kozo exemplifies the refined yet deeply expressive character that established him as a leading master of modern Shino ware. The form is upright and gently tapered, with a soft, reassuring weight that sits comfortably in the hand. Subtle asymmetry in the rim and profile lends the vessel a quiet vitality, balancing disciplined craftsmanship with natural irregularity.

The surface is coated in a creamy, feldspathic Shino glaze, softly blushed with warm peach and fire tinted tones from prolonged kiln firing. Bold yet restrained brushwork in iron underglaze emerges through the milky surface, creating rhythmic, abstract patterns that animate the cup without overwhelming its form. Pinholing, crawling, and fine surface variations testify to the dynamic interaction between glaze, clay, and flame, hallmarks of high quality Shino ware.

The interior is smoothly glazed, offering a comfortable drinking surface while maintaining the tactile richness prized in tea ceramics. The yunomi is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako) and original leaflet, affirming authenticity and provenance.
