A Bizen Yunomi (備前湯呑)
Heisei Era (1989-2019)
About the work
This Bizen guinomi by Takami Katsuyo presents a compact yet expressive form that highlights the quiet strength of traditional Bizen aesthetics. The cup is cylindrical with softly rounded contours and a subtly irregular rim, creating a balanced presence that feels natural in the hand. There is also a small, applied lug accent on the side.
The surface displays classic Bizen firing effects, with warm reddish brown tones layered with darker, kiln darkened areas and patches of olive and ash glaze naturally formed during wood firing. Fine grit and mineral inclusions remain visible throughout, emphasizing the raw character of the clay. Subtle variations in color and texture shift across the surface, revealing the influence of flame direction and placement within the kiln.
The interior is smoothly fired, retaining the earthy warmth of Bizen clay while offering a comfortable surface for use. The foot is neatly finished, bearing the artist’s mark. The guinomi is accompanied by its original wooden storage box, inscribed by the artist, confirming authenticity.

Footnote
Takami Katsuyo was born in 1947 in Okayama Prefecture. After graduating high school, she worked in the local ceramic industry before studying under the Bizen artist Inoue Yoshika in 1966. She later joined the East Chugoku Branch of the Japan Kōgei Association and continued to refine her approach to Bizen ware, blending traditional methods with a sensibility shaped by her own perspective. Her work emphasizes modest, functional forms and the quiet aesthetic of unglazed Bizen clay, earning recognition within regional exhibitions and through her long career as a ceramic artist.
