A Bizen Flower Vase (備前花生)

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

A powerful sculptural Bizen flower vase by Kakurezaki Ryuichi, one of the most acclaimed contemporary Bizen potters. Known for his bold, deconstructive forms and innovative reinterpretation of Bizen ware, Kakurezaki’s works are recognized internationally as both functional vessels and avant-garde ceramic art.

This vase, 25.5 cm in height, is distinguished by its angular, asymmetrical silhouette and rich natural ash deposits from the wood-firing process. Its surface reveals deep reds, browns, and subtle greenish tones, with striking variations that highlight the artist’s mastery of kiln effects. The elongated neck contrasts with the faceted, twisting body, producing a dynamic interplay of balance and tension.

The work is accompanied by its original signed tomobako (wooden storage box), inscribed and sealed by the artist, along with a cloth and insert.
