An Aka Shino Yunomi (赤志野 湯呑)
Heisei Era (1989-2019)
About the work
This aka shino yunomi by Kato Toyohisa(加藤豊久), who later adopted the name 土代久, is a compact yet forceful example of expressive Shino ware, embodying both vitality and restraint. The cylindrical form rises with a gentle inward taper, its subtly uneven rim and softly faceted walls revealing the hand of the artist. The proportions are carefully judged, offering a comfortable grip while maintaining a strong visual presence.
The surface is animated by a thick application of aka shino glaze, dramatically contrasting milky white feldspathic areas with rich iron saturated reds. The glaze breaks and crawls across the body, exposing granular clay textures beneath, while dense pinholing and fire marks testify to the intensity of the firing. Iron rich lines and blushes cut through the white glaze, creating a dynamic, almost calligraphic rhythm that shifts as the vessel is turned. The base shows swirling kiln effects and controlled glaze pooling, further emphasizing the physicality of the process.
It is accompanied by its original wooden storage box signed and sealed by the artist, along with the original cloth and a biographical leaflet, confirming authenticity and careful preservation.
