A Gilt Decorated Guinomi (金彩ぐい呑)

Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019 – present)

About the work

This gilt decorated guinomi by Wakao Kei isrefined while balances graphic clarity with subtle luxury. The form is compact and slightly rounded, with gently faceted sides that create a soft hexagonal impression when viewed from above. Its proportions are intimate and well judged, fitting naturally in the hand and reinforcing its intended use as a sake cup.

The exterior surface is decorated with abstracted, flowing motifs rendered in warm brown tones against a creamy ground, creating a rhythmic, almost calligraphic pattern that wraps the vessel. Inside, the cup is finished with a rich gold glaze, luminous and finely textured, producing a striking contrast with the understated exterior. The gold surface catches the light with quiet brilliance, transforming the interior into a contemplative focal point when the cup is tilted or emptied.

It is accompanied by its original wooden storage box, confirming authorship and careful preservation.
