An Iga Guinomi (伊賀 ぐい呑)
Showa Era (1926-1989) or Heisei Era (1989-2019)
About the work
This guinomi by Fujioka Shuhei is a compelling example of Iga ware, characterized by its rugged form and natural kiln effects. The vessel features a thick, uneven rim and deeply textured body, with pronounced ridges and faceted contours that emphasize its hand-built character.
The surface displays dramatic kiln transformation (yohen), with ash deposits, scorched tones, and areas of natural glaze forming a complex interplay of earthy grays, charred blacks, and warm reddish flashes. Subtle glassy accretions and granular textures reflect the intense firing process typical of Iga kilns, evoking a strong sense of wabi-sabi aesthetics. The interior remains dark and quietly reflective, contrasting with the dynamic exterior.
The piece is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), cloth, and documentation.
