A Celadon Tea Bowl (青磁茶碗)
Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)
About the work
A refined celadon tea bowl by Uraguchi Masayuki, a contemporary Japanese ceramic
artist celebrated for his elegant reinterpretation of classical celadon traditions. The
bowl is characterised by its softly asymmetrical form, gently flaring rim, and luminous
pale blue-green glaze that evokes the serene beauty of historic East Asian celadons.
The surface is covered in a translucent celadon glaze of remarkable depth and clarity,
revealing subtle crackling and delicate tonal variations beneath the glaze. Small
intentional indentations along the exterior create points of visual interest and
introduce a sense of spontaneity to the otherwise restrained form. The warm reddish-
brown clay visible at the rim and foot provides a subtle contrast to the cool celadon
tones, enhancing the vessel's quiet elegance.
The present work demonstrates Uraguchi's mastery of celadon glazing and his ability
to create contemporary ceramics that remain deeply connected to the classical
traditions of East Asian porcelain.

Footnote
Uraguchi Masayuki, born in 1964 in Tokyo, found his inspiration during his studies at the Tokyo University of the Arts, where a National Treasure celadon vase sparked his lifelong passion for celadon glazing. He trained under Miura Koheiji, later refining his craft through extensive personal research, which included studying ancient Chinese ceramics firsthand. His work stands out for its innovative glazes and attention to detail, blending traditional influences with his distinctive, modern interpretation.
