A Shudo Bronze Slender Flower Vase (朱銅一輪生)

Showa Era (1926-1989)

About the work

An elegant flower vase by Hasuda Shugoro, one of the leading figures in modern Japanese metalwork. The vessel combines a compact, gently squared body with a remarkably long and slender neck, producing a poised architectural silhouette.

The surface is finished in a rich reddish brown shudō bronze patina, subtly modulated with warm copper, russet and darker tones. The restrained colouring emphasises the smooth transitions between the broad body, rounded shoulders and elongated neck, allowing the qualities of the metal and patination to take visual prominence.

Across the lower body, fine linear decoration crosses in an understated asymmetrical arrangement. These slender lines provide a delicate contrast to the broad uninterrupted planes of patinated metal and introduce a distinctly modern graphic element without disturbing the vessel's simplicity. The subtle variations in colour and surface further enhance its sculptural presence.

The work is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako).
