A White Bronze Dove Incense Burner (白銅 鳩薫炉)

Showa Era (1926-1989)

About the work

An elegant white bronze incense burner by the renowned metal artist Hasuda Shugoro, masterfully cast in the graceful form of a dove. A symbol of peace, harmony, and longevity in Japanese culture, the bird is rendered with remarkable simplicity and refinement, embodying the quiet elegance for which Hasuda's works are celebrated.

The streamlined body serves as the incense chamber, while the removable tail section provides access to the interior. A small vent rises subtly from the bird's back, allowing fragrant smoke to escape gently during use. The smooth, softly modelled form is enhanced by delicately incised feather details and a rich silvery-grey patina that has developed beautifully over time, highlighting the understated sophistication of the hakudō alloy.

The underside bears the artist's incised signature, and the incense burner is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako).
