An Aka-Shino Warizanshō Bowl (赤志野割山椒)

Shōwa Era (1926–1989) or Heisei Era (1989–2019)

About the work

An expressive Aka-Shino bowl by Kato Toyohisa, modelled in the warizanshō form, whose divided outline evokes the opening husk of a Japanese pepper berry. Deep notches interrupt the rim, creating a sculptural silhouette that contrasts with the rounded lower body.

The warm reddish surface is covered in places by thick, creamy white glaze. These pale passages gather along the raised edges and descend in irregular runs, emphasising the divisions in the form. Fine pits and darker speckles add texture to the quieter areas of red glaze.

Inside, the reddish ground remains prominent, with lighter glaze pooling around the contours and catching the light near the mouth. The changing relationship between the red body and white glaze gives each section its own character, while maintaining a coherent composition around the vessel.

The bowl offers an energetic interpretation of a traditional serving form, with enough sculptural interest to be displayed independently. Accompanied by its original wooden box. The seller identifies it as an early work purchased at an exhibition at Ishizaka in Kinshichō.
