A Bizen Flower Vase (備前 窯変 桟切 花入)

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

A Bizen ware flower vase crafted by Koichi Suzuki, a prominent figure in traditional Japanese ceramics, this piece beautifully showcases the unique aesthetics of Bizen pottery. The vase features a striking "yohen" kiln transformation, characterized by the vivid Sangkiri effect, which adds a dramatic red hue to the surface. The bold wheel marks ascending the body illustrate Suzuki's skilled craftsmanship, while the rich "goma" glaze near the mouth enhances the overall textural complexity of the piece.

Included with the vase are a tomobako (signed wooden storage box), a protective cloth, and an informational leaflet detailing the artist’s accomplishments, which add to the value and authenticity of this unique artwork.

Footnote

Koichi Suzuki is the eldest son of the esteemed potter Koya Suzuki, pursued an apprenticeship under the celebrated potter Yagihiko Kusube to develop his expertise in ceramics. After returning to Okayama, he took over his father's work, dedicating himself to Bizen pottery. Throughout his career, Suzuki received numerous accolades, including awards from prestigious exhibitions like the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition and the Japan Kogei Association’s Chugoku Branch. His mastery of yohen (kiln transformations) and Sangkiri glazing has cemented his reputation as one of the leading Bizen artists of his generation.
