Isezaki Mitsuru (伊勢崎満), Japanese (1934–2011)

A Bizen Flattened Jar (備前扁壷)

Shōwa Era (1926–1989)

About the work

A substantial Bizen flower vessel by Isezaki Mitsuru, described in the listing as a flattened jar. Its rounded body narrows towards a short neck and open lip, presenting a strong silhouette with minimal decorative intervention.

The exterior displays warm orange-brown clay interspersed with darker smoky areas and fine ash speckling. These variations spread unevenly across the shoulder and lower body, creating a richly changing surface. Small lighter patches provide further contrast against the darker firing marks.

The neck rises smoothly from the shoulder, with a simple flaring rim that echoes the broad curves below. The combination of generous proportions and natural surface effects gives the vessel a grounded presence. Its decoration is created through firing rather than through an applied pictorial scheme.

The piece would complement a simple arrangement of branches or flowers and can also be appreciated as an independent ceramic form. Accompanied by its original wooden box and artist leaflet. The seller records some discolouration; the photographs should be consulted when assessing its present condition.

Footnote

Isezaki Mitsuru (1934–2011) was born in Imbe, Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, the eldest son of Isezaki Yōzan, a recognized preserver of Bizen traditions. Trained by his father, he also studied sculpture at Okayama University before establishing himself as a major figure in postwar Bizen ceramics. From 1959 he was regularly selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition and later contributed to important national ceramic exhibitions. In 1962 he successfully revived and fired an ancient Heian-period Bizen kiln, reinforcing his role in preserving traditional techniques. Alongside tea and sake vessels, he produced large-scale ceramic sculptures, reflecting both mastery of Bizen tradition and innovative artistic vision.
