A Metal Brush Washer (金属製筆洗)

Shōwa Era (1926–1989) or Heisei Era (1989–2019)

About the work

A compact metal brush washer by Hasuda Shūgorō, combining a low cylindrical body with small projecting side grips and short supporting feet. Its dark polished surface and carefully arranged incised lines give it a restrained architectural character.

The body opens into a wide, gently flaring mouth, creating a clear contrast between the shallow interior and the firm horizontal outline. Several fine bands circle the exterior. A short vertical line interrupts them, introducing a simple geometric accent without relying on pictorial decoration.

The side grips have a more textured finish than the body, while the low feet lift the vessel slightly from the display surface. These contrasts of texture and proportion give interest to an otherwise economical design. Reflections across the dark metal emphasise its smooth curvature.

The shallow, open form is suited to washing brushes in the calligraphic setting. Its small grips and raised feet combine practical detailing with the clarity of a sculptural object, allowing the brush washer to be appreciated for both its function and its restrained metalwork.
