About the work

A finely cast gilt bronze paperweight in the form of a clematis (tessen) flower by Hasuda Shugoro, one of Japan’s most esteemed metal artists. Known for his innovative approach to traditional forms, Hasuda imbued everyday objects with sculptural elegance and symbolic depth.

This paperweight features a six-petaled clematis motif, each petal rendered with subtle curvature and dimensionality. The surface bears a warm, aged patina, and the reverse is engraved with Hasuda’s signature character (修), affirming its authenticity. The piece is housed in its original tomobako, inscribed with the artist’s name and the title of the work.

Hasuda Shugoro was a prominent Japanese metal artist known for his expertise in blending traditional casting techniques with modern aesthetics. His career earned him numerous accolades, including the Japanese Order of Culture, cementing his influence in Japanese metalwork and leaving a legacy that continues to inspire.
