An Engraved Bronze Sculpture – Zodiac Rat (Nezumi)
Showa Era (1926 – 1989) or Heisei Era (1989–2019)
About the work
This finely cast bronze sculpture by Kobayashi Shomin depicts the rat, the first sign in the Chinese zodiac, poised mid-step with alert energy and gentle curiosity. The engraved surface enhances the expressive contours of the figure, while subtle hammering marks provide visual texture and refinement.
A balance of symbolic strength and modern craftsmanship, this work reflects the artist’s background in traditional metal techniques and participation in Japan's prestigious Nitten exhibitions. The sculpture is housed in its original signed tomobako (wooden storage box).
