About the work

A refined large plate by Living National Treasure Tatsuzo Shimaoka, one of the most celebrated masters of Mashiko ware. The composition centres on a bold abstract motif rendered in rich iron-brown and soft blue-green glaze tones, framed by an intricately textured jōmon-zōgan style surface. The rhythmic carved patterning across the broad rim creates a striking tactile quality while enhancing the plate’s quiet architectural balance.

Shimaoka’s mastery of inlay technique is evident in the subtle contrast between the earthy clay body and the layered glaze surface. The restrained palette and carefully balanced form embody the synthesis of folk craft aesthetics and sophisticated modern ceramic design for which the artist became internationally renowned.

Tatsuzo Shimaoka, born in Tokyo in 1919, was an acclaimed Japanese potter who became a Living National Treasure in 1996. He was known for his development of Jomon Zogan—an inlay technique combining traditional Japanese rope patterns with slip inlay inspired by Korean pottery. Shimaoka studied under the legendary Shoji Hamada, known as the "Reviver of Mashiko Ware," and later established himself as an independent potter. His work carries forward the folk art ethos, blending old traditions with innovation, making significant contributions to the global appreciation of Mashiko ware.
