Suwa Sozan ( 諏訪蘇山)
The Suwa Sozan family is known for sculpture, celadon and refined ceramic techniques. The first Suwa Sozan, born in 1851, shifted from military service to ceramics, studying painting and absorbing wide technical knowledge before contributing to Kutani ware, teaching at Kanazawa Technical School and later producing acclaimed celadon that recreated Southern Song glazes. His adopted daughter succeeded as the second Sozan in 1922. The third Sozan, trained at Kyoto City University of Arts, established a polished personal style before passing the lineage to his daughter, born in 1970, who became the fourth Suwa Sozan in 2002.
