Toyo Kaneshige (金重陶陽)

Toyo Kaneshige (1896–1967) was a Japanese potter from Okayama who worked in Imbe and played a pivotal role in the revival of Bizen ceramics. Active in the Momoyama revival movement of the 1930s, he is credited with rediscovering the techniques used to produce the wabi tea wares of the Azuchi Momoyama period. In 1955, he helped establish the Japan Kōgei Association, and in 1956 was designated a Living National Treasure for his achievements in Bizen ware. His work is regarded as foundational to the development of modern Japanese ceramics.
