An Aka-Shino Sake Cup

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

This Aka-Shino guinomi by Kato Toyohisa is a powerful expression of the Mino tradition. The cup is formed in a robust hand-molded style, its surface marked by vivid iron-rich red clay contrasted with thick feldspathic white glaze that flows in irregular bands across the body. The surface is further enhanced by natural pitting and kiln effects, giving the piece a deeply tactile and earthy character. The bold interplay between red and white captures the essence of Shino ware aesthetics: rustic simplicity paired with quiet refinement.

The sake cup is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), protective cloth, and explanatory insert (shiori), providing full assurance of authenticity and provenance.
