A Neriage Zogan Bamboo Motif Square Vase (練上象嵌竹紋角壺)

Showa Era (1926-1989)

About the work

This striking square vase by Tatsuzo Shimaoka demonstrates the artist’s mastery of decorative clay techniques and his deep connection to the Mashiko ceramic tradition. The vessel is constructed with a compact, architectural form, its four flat sides providing a structured surface for the flowing bamboo motif executed in neriage zogan, a layered clay inlay technique. The bamboo pattern appears to emerge organically from the clay body, creating movement across the otherwise geometric shape.

The surface is finished with a warm, natural glaze that reveals earthy brown streaks and subtle tonal variation from the firing process. These natural effects enhance the carved bamboo imagery while emphasizing the tactile quality of the vessel. The narrow neck rises gently from the square body and is finished with soft glaze runs that add vertical rhythm to the design.

The piece is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box and documentation.

Footnote

Tatsuzo Shimaoka, born in Tokyo in 1919, was an acclaimed Japanese potter who became a Living National Treasure in 1996. He was known for his development of Jomon Zogan—an inlay technique combining traditional Japanese rope patterns with slip inlay inspired by Korean pottery. Shimaoka studied under the legendary Shoji Hamada, known as the "Reviver of Mashiko Ware," and later established himself as an independent potter. His work carries forward the folk art ethos, blending old traditions with innovation, making significant contributions to the global appreciation of Mashiko ware.
