A Tenmoku Ceramic Headrest (天目釉陶枕)

Showa Era (1926-1989) or Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019 – present)

About the work

This remarkable ceramic headrest (makura) by American-born potter Malcolm Wright is a rare and sculptural work rendered in deep Tenmoku glaze. The form—a gentle, asymmetrical curve—evokes both utility and art, with sweeping lines and a reflective, fire-kissed surface showing fluid reddish iron accents against a black-brown ground. Traditionally used in Asian cultures, the ceramic headrest is reimagined here with a bold, modern sensibility.

Included is the original tomobako (signed wooden storage box), ensuring authenticity and preserving its provenance.
