A Small Aka-Shino Teabowl with Fuji Motif

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

his small Aka-Shino teabowl by Kato Toyohisa, who later adopted the name 土代久, features a vivid and expressive glaze surface characteristic of his mature work. The bowl’s exterior displays a dynamic red-orange shino body over which milky feldspathic glaze gathers in a pattern evoking the silhouette of Mount Fuji. The intentional crackling and crawling of the glaze create a richly textured surface, adding depth and movement to the motif.

The form is compact and comfortably hand-held, with a softly irregular rim that enhances the bowl’s organic presence. Inside, the glaze transitions into a warmer, more subdued tone, creating a harmonious contrast with the energetic exterior. This work exemplifies the artist’s celebrated ability to merge traditional Shino aesthetics with personal interpretation.
