A Bizen Yunomi (備前湯呑)

Showa Era (1926-1989), Heisei Era (1989-2019) or Reiwa Era (2019-present)

About the work

This Bizen yunomi by Kakurezaki Ryuichi exemplifies the artist’s bold, sculptural interpretation of traditional Bizen ware. The form is upright and faceted, with assertive planar surfaces that give the cup a strong architectural presence. Subtle irregularities in the rim and body introduce tension and movement, reinforcing the sense of a hand shaped, intentional object rather than a symmetrical vessel.

The surface displays classic Bizen firing effects created through prolonged wood firing. Earthy reddish browns emerge alongside ash gray and darker kiln marked areas, with granular textures and natural vitrification enriching the surface. The contrast between rougher exterior textures and the smoother interior highlights Kakurezaki’s control of clay and fire. The foot is carefully finished and bears the artist’s mark.

Both functional and sculptural, this yunomi offers a satisfying weight and tactile presence in the hand. It is accompanied by its original wooden storage box, confirming authenticity.
