An Inlaid Red Enamel Flat Vase (象嵌赤絵 草花文 扁壺)

Showa Era (1926-1989)

About the work

This flat vase by Tatsuzo Shimaoka is a refined example of his mature Mashiko style, combining rhythmic surface texture with carefully controlled zōgan inlay and red enamel decoration. The compressed, disc-like body is gently rounded, with a short, upright neck that provides a quiet vertical accent to the otherwise horizontal form. The surface is densely worked with parallel cord-like impressions, creating a tactile field that animates the pale glaze and catches light subtly across the vessel.

Inset medallions decorate the body, each enclosing stylized grass and floral motifs rendered in red, green, and yellow enamels. These designs are carved, inlaid, and overglazed with precision, standing out clearly against the softly speckled ground. The restrained palette and balanced placement reflect Shimaoka’s sensitivity to folk tradition and modern composition.

The vase is accompanied by its original wooden storage box, confirming authenticity and provenance.

Footnote

Tatsuzo Shimaoka, born in Tokyo in 1919, was an acclaimed Japanese potter who became a Living National Treasure in 1996. He was known for his development of Jomon Zogan—an inlay technique combining traditional Japanese rope patterns with slip inlay inspired by Korean pottery. Shimaoka studied under the legendary Shoji Hamada, known as the "Reviver of Mashiko Ware," and later established himself as an independent potter. His work carries forward the folk art ethos, blending old traditions with innovation, making significant contributions to the global appreciation of Mashiko ware.
