An Oribe Matcha Tea Bowl (織部 抹茶茶碗)
Showa Era (1926-1989)
About the work
This Oribe chawan by Aoki Kunihiro displays the bold asymmetry and expressive glazing characteristic of Oribe ware. The bowl is generously rounded with a softly undulating rim, creating a relaxed yet intentional form that sits comfortably in the hands. Its proportions balance weight and openness, suitable for both formal tea gatherings and contemplative use.
The surface is defined by a rich contrast between creamy white feldspathic glaze and deep Oribe green, which pools and flows unevenly across the exterior and interior rim. Iron brushwork emerges through the glaze in spontaneous, plant like motifs, adding rhythmic movement and visual depth. Fine crackle and subtle kiln marks contribute to a sense of warmth and age, while the foot reveals the earthy clay body and confident wheel work.
The tea bowl is accompanied by its original wooden storage box and cloth, attesting to its authenticity and care.
