About the work

This black sake cup by Isezaki Koichiro exemplifies the powerful material presence and uncompromising approach characteristic of contemporary Bizen ware. The form is compact and weighty, rising from a subtly rounded base into a gently tapering body. The rim is intentionally uneven, creating a natural rhythm that emphasizes the cup’s hand formed origin and invites tactile engagement.

The surface is fired without glaze, relying instead on the effects of wood firing to generate a deep, matte black tone. Subtle variations emerge across the body, with areas of dark charcoal, iron rich brown, and occasional reddish highlights where the flame has licked the clay. Fine pitting, kiln scars, and ash deposits animate the surface, giving the vessel a rugged, almost geological texture that reflects the intensity of the firing process. The interior is dark and absorbent in appearance, enhancing the visual depth of the cup and lending warmth to its use with sake.

It is accompanied by its original wooden storage box and cloth, confirming authenticity and careful preservation.

Isezaki Koichiro, born in Bizen City in 1974, is a contemporary Japanese ceramic artist and the son of Isezaki Jun, an Important Intangible Cultural Property holder for Bizen ware. After graduating from the sculpture department of Tokyo Zokei University, he studied ceramics in New York under Jeff Shapiro, an experience that profoundly shaped his approach. Incorporating sculptural and object based elements into traditional Bizen ware, Isezaki has developed a distinctive practice that balances artistic expression with exceptional usability. His works function both as compelling sculptural forms and as thoughtfully engineered vessels, uniting artistic presence with the refined beauty of use.
