About the work
This vase by Kakurezaki Ryuichi is a powerful example of contemporary Bizen ware, distinguished by its sculptural form and expressive firing effects. The vessel features an angular, faceted body with sharply rising planes that converge into a dynamic, open mouth. Small lug handles (mimi) accent the sides, reinforcing its connection to traditional forms while enhancing its architectural presence.
The surface displays rich natural ash effects and kiln transformations characteristic of Bizen firing, with earthy tones ranging from warm reddish browns to gray and olive hues. Subtle scorch marks and vitrified textures reveal the intensity of the wood-firing process, giving the piece depth and individuality.
The vase is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako).
