About the work

This refined bronze vase by Hasuda Shugoro demonstrates the artist’s exceptional mastery of traditional Japanese metalworking and sculptural form. Titled Koma (“Spinning Top”), the vessel presents a harmonious silhouette inspired by the balanced geometry of a traditional spinning top, with softly tapering contours and a compact cylindrical neck.

Executed in shudo bronze, the surface displays rich reddish-brown tones animated by flowing abstract patterns and subtle linear incisions encircling the body. The carefully controlled patination creates a dynamic interplay of warm bronze hues and darker oxidized areas, emphasizing both the sculptural volume and the tactile quality of the metal. The understated decoration and restrained elegance reflect Hasuda’s deep sensitivity to form, proportion, and material.

The vase is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), documentation, and presentation wrapping.
