A Sahari Water Jar with Fine Incised Stripe Decoration (砂張千筋文様水指)

Showa Era (1926 – 1989) or Heisei Era (1989- 2019)

About the work

An elegant mizusashi (water jar) by Iraku Uozumi III Yasuhiko, crafted in sahari, a traditional high tin bronze alloy long prized in Japan for its refined colour, subtle lustre, and resonant acoustic qualities. Intended for use in the Japanese tea ceremony, the vessel demonstrates the artist's mastery of metal casting and surface finishing.

The gently rounded cylindrical form is decorated with finely incised vertical lines that wrap around the body, creating a sophisticated textured surface. Contrasting polished bands with delicate oval motifs interrupt the linear pattern, lending the composition a quiet rhythm while accentuating the warm silvery bronze tones. The understated fitted lid, crowned with a simple loop handle, complements the vessel's restrained elegance.

Entirely cast and finished by hand, the mizusashi reflects the centuries old metalworking tradition of the Uozumi family, whose workshop has been closely associated with the tea ceremony and Kyoto craftsmanship for generations. Its refined proportions and timeless design make it equally suitable for tea practice or as a distinguished display piece.

The water jar bears the artist's signature and is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako) and accompanying documentation.
